Mama Kat Thursday: Wardrobe Malfunction

The Mama Kat topic option for this week is: "Write about a wardrobe malfunction."

I was in high school during those uncomfortable years before jeans were okay to wear to school and pantyhose was a wardrobe staple.
Girls wore either dresses with nylons, the thigh-high kind that require a girdle with garters, or a nice pantsuit. (It was the very early 70's and classy wide-leg pantsuits were all the rage!)

So, on my day of strategic wardrobe failure, I was a freshman in high school wearing a dress with nylons. It was a simple, sleeveless shift dress that zipped up the back with a long metal zipper that ran from my color to my tailbone. It wasn't one my Mother made. If it had been, I'm quite sure it wouldn't have malfunctioned, but this dress was a used, previously worn dress that had somehow come into my hands. It had a course, tweedy weave in a off-white color and I liked it.
I guess that metal zipper just abruptly came apart in the middle, splitting from my shoulder blades to my waist, exposing the back of my bra.
I had no idea. It was after 6th period and I was casually strolling down the hall on my way to my locker to get my books for 7th period when boy I didn't know came up behind me and whispered that my dress was open in back.

Reaching behind, I was horrified to feel my bare back exposed through that wide open zipper!
My face burned with embarrassment. How long had it been like this? I didn't know how long I might have been walking around like that. Worst of all, it had to be a boy who noticed!
I clutched the zipper opening closed as best I could and scuttled quickly to my locker where I knew I had a light jacket I could put on to cover it.
Luckily, I was only one class away from going home.

Looking back, I suspect the zipper wasn't split all day---surely my friends would've noticed at lunch. It probably split sometime during 6th period, while I was sitting in my chair and it was a great kindness of that boy to let me know, though his friend did snicker at my predicament.

School back then ran from 8 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. ;)

Better the back of the bra than the front I guess! Small comfort to a freshman girl!
What a nice boy that he told you.
