Garden project this week was re-adjusting the pavers edging my Hosta bed on the north side of the garage. They were in a bit of a mess.

  My first car waa a baby blue 1978 Ford Pinto Hatchback, 4-speed standard transmission just like this. I bought it after I got out of the Air Force and returned home to Indiana. It was 1980 and I was planning on going to college. I saw it advertised for sale by an individual in the local paper. Price was great and it was in great condition. It got 45 miles to the galleon on the highway--which actually puts modern, lighter gasoline burning vehicles to shame, considering that blue body was all metal. Heavy, too--on a good downward hill in neutral it could coast 50-60 miles an hour flat out.  It took me to college the next years and was our primary vehicle after husband and I got married for another year or so. I looking back, I regret we didn't keep it after we bought a new car. It would've been smarter to have kept it.

Mama Kat Thursday: The Memorable Dad Lesson

The best thing my Dad ever taught me: An amusing picture of Bette Davis from Pinterest During the nearly 5 years I was in the Air Force, I never owned a car.  Once I got out of service, returned home and was planning to go off to college in the fall, then I needed one. So I finally bought car. Before I was going to go driving off to live on my own, though, my Dad wanted to make sure I knew all the basics of car care: 1)  How to Change a Tire.  He made sure I knew where the jack and lug wrench were stored in the wheel well, how to properly place the jack plus block another wheel and how to use the lug wrench. (I had already purchased a 4-way lug wrench because I felt it would provide me better leverage for the task, should I ever be called upon to do change a flat.)  2)  How to Check Fluids.  He showed me where the oil dip stick was and how to check it. Mama Kat Thursday: Fall Memories

The Mama Kat prompt I chose today is to write a post inspired by the word: fall. I grew up in central Indiana, that part that's more trees and hills.  Our property was heavily forested and the area around the house full of trees with large leaves: White Oak, Pin Oak, Red Oak, Red Maple, Silver Maple and Tulip Poplars, to name a few. In Autumn, all of them would turn vivid yellows, oranges and russet red and drop there leaves thickly on the ground, which necessitated raking. So, we'd do what kids always do with fall leaves when they have to rake them: make big piles and leap into them! Us and the dog, too. Dry fall leaves have a crisp fragrance all their own. We'd also use those leaves for playing house with our dolls. We'd rake those colorful, crunchy leaves into narrow rows in the outline shape of the dimension of a "house" with 2 or 3 rooms and  doorways. Mama Kat Thursday: You Can't Sit Here

T he Mama Kat blog writing prompt of chosen today is, "Write a post inspired by the word: Late." I think everyone has their own preferences for when being late or being on time matters. As I general rule, I like to be on time. Old habit from being in the military. For Hubby, too. However, if it's a large group event where seating is involved, especially if it involves tables full of people for a conference meal or celebration, I absolutely never want to arrive late.  I must arrive 15 or 20 minutes early, so I can be sure to have my pick of where to sit and I can possess a spot. Then I can be the one in control and others, who arrive late, have to ask me if they can join me at  my table.  I  don't prefer the reverse. I dislike having to search for a seat among strangers, asking for a place to sit, It reminds me too much of my school years riding the school bus.  We lived way out in the country and the school bus picked me and, later, my sisters...

Mama Kat Thursday: Grandma's Piano

For Mama Kat Thursday, I'm going to do a series on "Memories from Grandma's House," highlighting some of my more amusing memories of visiting my Mom's Mother, whom we called, "Grandma Robbins." (Since we had two grandma's, we identified them by last name.) This was Grandma's Robbin's  house in Mantorville, Minnesota. It's the house Mother grew up in, her and her 6 other siblings.  This how it looks now. (photo from Google Earth.)  But back in the 60's, it still had white wood siding, old fashioned ceiling to floor glass windows, lots more green shrubs close to the house and more trees in the yard plus an old barn on the other side that served as a garage with a big garden next to it.  It was a huge house, old in the 60's when we were visiting.
