Mama Kat Thursday: Quotes to Live By
The exciting Mama Kat blog prompt for this week is:
"Share a quote from someone that has stuck with you."
I can think of a number of quotes over the years that have stuck with me for one reason or another.
When I joined the Air Force and went to tech school to learn how to be a medic, one of my instructors said to the class, "You're not here to be served, but to serve." He meant our job as medics wasn't about making ourselves feel comfortable, it was about making our patients feel comfortable. He was talking about a worth ethic and it struck me as so relevant, I adopted it as own and lived by it for the next 5 years in service. Indeed, in any job since then I've used it for focus.
It wasn't until I started reading the Bible a few years after tech school that I realized where that Air Force instructor drew that bit of wisdom he quoted. He got what he said from something Jesus said in Mark: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life a ransom for many."
I also have several favorite movie quotes I love because they offer valuable life perspectives.
One is on the photo of Bill & Ted above, which actually is a quote from Socrates saying, "True wisdom is knowing you know nothing."
The older I get, the more true I know this is. When I was 20, I felt like I had all the answers, but humility comes with age and now I'm certain I don't.
My two other favorite life perspective quotes the first Jurassic Park:
Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) says,"You were so busy doing something because you could, you never bothered to ask whether you should!"
That is just so smart. Taking time out to ask, "should I do this?" would probably stop a lot of gun violence.
The other is stated by Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern).
"That we're ever in control," she says, "THAT is the illusion!"Truly so. One only needs watch the weather channel to know we're not in control. We only think we are.

The last quote I live by is one the admin lady at the flower shop who used to work at used to say all the time. She'd say: "It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease." I always have to ponder sayings to get their particular points, but this one means that only those who speak up will gain any attention.
I can't count how many times over the years I've gotten gift cards or coupons for free replacements or discounts just by taking the time to email a manufacturer or restaurant chain with my problem.about It is the squeaky wheel that get's the grease.
Hope you enjoyed by favorite quotes! Thanks for stopping by!

And I certainly know way less than I did when I was 20! That is sure true.
