Garden Pic Wednesday: First Christmas Cactus Bloom!

Image
Today was a nice cold sunny day; the first after several days of rain, so it was a chance to get some outside things done: #1 on my list was laying down some Scott's Winterguard with Weed Control Turf Builder.  I've never used it before, but decided I would this year because the weed growth is ridiculous between now and spring. I thought it'd put me ahead. It's for fall application after temps get under 60 degrees. Also requires the grass be wet for application, so I had to hose it down lightly before hand. Then weather needs to be clear of rain for 24 hours afterwards. This is different then Weed & Feed, which needs to be watered in. #2 on my list was trimming back the lower portion of one of the front yard Pampas Grass clumps because it was becoming intrusive. Also pulled up frost-killed Vinca plants--though there are plenty of infant Vinca's around that weren't frost-killed and I'm sure a host of them will pop up fresh from scattered seed co...

Garden Pic Wednesday: Mini-me Box Turtle

Image
Today's Garden Pic of the Day is a "mini-me" Box Turtle I saw just sitting on the block wall on Monday as Hubby and I were walking up the walk after coming home from the Fitness Center. He's sitting in my Hubby's hands, all of 2 inches in size! Such big eyes! Baby Box Turtle We released him in the back yard. Boxies are territorial--maybe he'll stay. ***** Today's other projects: Move the Houseplants Inside! It will be getting down into the 40's this weekend at night! All my houseplants happily spend spring & summer outside. This year though, one of the variegated Spider plants died. So I have one pot with a bushy Spider plant hanging in the kitchen and one that has just a few Spider babies in it. I hang a Dracaena plant in the guest bath and I have a Silver Arrowhead in the master bath, though, I must say, that Arrowhead was in pitiful shape and had to have a complete re-potting. Both it and the one Spider plant will need to re-gr...

Wednesday Garden Pics: Hens & Christmas Cactus!

Image
Welcome back! Just before starting this I was reading a travel/leisure article-photo series about the worlds, "strangest bridges," such as the bridge in China with a huge Ferris wheel in the middle. Of course, I scrolled down to look for witty user comments and the first one I read made me burst into laughter:  Someone wrote: " It's all fun and games till those bridges come alive and form into Decepticons." (I suppose you have to be a Transformer fan to get that.) Anyway, on to Garden Pictures: First up: a shot of  the "teacup" portion of my garden. This is one of several teacups I have with Hen & Chick succulents installed in them in a bed running along a retaining wall we put in a couple years ago. I just added the pea gravel around all of them only a few weeks ago, because I like how it enhances their looks. It also helps prevent rain from washing the soil out of the cup! Next pic is of my Christmas Cactus laden with bloom bu...
