Garden Pic Wednesday: Winter Crops

Image
The squirrels litter my back yard below pine trees with cobbed pine cones they've burred down to the core, so I was walking around today picking those up. These cone cobs are often slightly curved with a few pine cone petals left on the very end, so they look a little like brown shrimp tails laying everywhere. Lots of pine cones the squirrels missed cobbing as well! I also cleaned up a few broken Pampas Grass fronds and pulled up the dead Zinnia's from the back bed. Today's Garden Pics are some of my veggie garden plantings for winter: First, my not-so-new 2-year old Bell Pepper: More of a Pepper "Tree" now.  It persists in making peppers and I've let it. Not terribly big peppers, but very thick-walled, which is something you want in peppers.  There's one on there now that will be in dinner tonight! This bed area faces South and gets full sun all year round--which is why this Pepper has thrived so long. Next: 3 Brand New Bell Peppers: ...

Garden Pic Wednesday: December Blooms

Image
Welcome back!    I'm sitting here with a cup of coffee and a snack size Mounds bar. (My favorite!) My husband got me one of those boxes of 8. I keep them in the freezer and have one after lunch, maybe every other day or so, depending on what I eat for lunch. I've discovered coconut milk creamer and love that in my coffee now! Only about 5 calories for a cupful and so full of good-for-you stuff! (It doesn't taste like coconut!)   We had a good rain the past couple days and today I went around with my watering can of Miracle-Gro just now to the broccoli and various blooming or bulb flowers. I have ever-blooming southern strawberries that like to start blooming now, but I've decided to nip their blooms thru January, because the berries only freeze. For pictures today I have broccoli, red saliva & button mums!   First up, because it's so Christmasy colored, is red Saliva! This one is in a front bed pot. There are 2 ...

Garden Pic Wednesday: Shamrocks & Broccoli!

Image
It's picture day again! Things are warming up this week, though we weren't unaffected by Sandy--despite being hundreds of miles from the coast. This past Sunday we could  feel  the low pressure from it. My husband and I both felt like we were wearing an invisible "hat" of pressure around our heads all day, giving us both slight headaches.   I feel bad for New York and New Jersey. That was an especially rough storm and they're not even remotely accustomed to such things. Unfortunately, we live on a planet that has--- weather!     But onwards and upwards... For Garden pics I have a couple of nice shots to show you.    First a recent pretty one my rust colored Dwarf Marigolds surrounded by Shamrocks, which happened to decide to bloom again now. (Shamrocks are the cute pink flowers.) Most years they just bloom in spring. I don't know what got in their heads this year! I transplanted this particular smattering ...
