Garden Pic Wednesday: Purple Shamrocks & Melba Bi-Color Daylilies

Image
Garden Pics this week: Nice shot of sunny Purple Shamrocks: Because they get more sun, these have green patches, but it gives them a nice look! They remain darker purple in full shade.   Daylilies are Blooming! These are a hybrid Daylily, which means they've been bred for a particular color. These aree a bi-color with 3 petals of one color and 3 of another shade. I call them "Melba" for their color, which is a pinkish-orange.  I bought them from a retired guy down the road who had a who huge garden of Hybrid Daylilies of every sort of color that he'd offer for sale every May, to thin them out. He sold me these particular ones for $2.00.  It's a very large Daylily with very tall greenery that's very hardy and prolific. I've separated it & moved clumps of it all sorts of places in various beds. Best $2 I ever spent!

My Purple Shamrocks are making a good show this year!  They're a good investment; very prolific in light sun to shady areas. This weeks project: I bought six small castle blocks and used what scalloped blocks I had around. The ground without the blocks was too low for the hydrangea's I had planted there and they were struggling. Really, one died. But in digging the survivor up, I found I could split off a section to make it into two; one on either side, more to front. Easter lilies are there, plus in back, I planted a couple 4 O' clock seeds of a particular color and plan on transplanting Marigolds seedlings to plant on back side.  The back is closer to tree and front fuller, since this is near properly line. Hopefully the Hydrangea's will thrive. They're a pretty bluish-purple when they bloom.| Among Southern shrubs, I like Hydrangea's best because they are easy to care for, don't require hedging and bloom all from spring thru frost. Plus they come in blu...

Garden Pic Wednesday: Purple Shamrocks & Rainlily

Image
There's a lady around the corner from us with a beautiful yard heavily landscaped with flower beds AND a rain garden. I've thought for a long time that I wanted to stop by to say hello and an unexpected opportunity to do so came up this week when I was out for my morning walk. She was out mowing and weed-eating, so I introduced myself. Her name is Sally. She's a little older then me. It was a great opportunity to talk gardening. Like me, she wants to replace grass with flower beds. She showed me her yard, then we walked down to my house and looked at mine. We traded numbers and she's going to contact me to give me some of her purple asters later in the autumn. So that was neat.  I have two photos today: Purple Shamrocks: The camera really doesn't do justice to the depth of their dark burgundy color, but it does reveal the lighter fushia pattern on the leaves that's less noticeable to the naked eye. They bloom light pink flowers all the time.  ...

Garden Pic Wednesday: Garden Views

A Riot of Easter Lilies in the Front Bed! I have them scattered both thick and thin all sorts of places. Next View was Today's Project: Hedging the Landscape Ivy The ivy is that row of green running to the A/C unit. The Pink Hydrangea you can see there is looking pretty this year. Last View: New Purple Leaf Shamrocks They bloom pink flowers, but the leaves are this deep purplish-pink. They are one of this spring's purchases. I bought them for contrasting color. There are about 10 here and there different places.  (You can see one along the bottom of the top photo in front of the container of Hen & Chicks.)
