Garden Pic Wednesday: Pampas Grass in Bloom!

Image
I have two Garden pics today: my white & pink Pampas Grass just blooming!  August is they're bloom season! Also, the set of 5 fancy hybrid Daylilies I ordered in June from Springhill Nursery came in the mail yesterday, so I've spent time both yesterday & today planting the fresh roots. It was a special offer buy now, pay after delivery; 5 different daylilies for $30, which is good since usually buying a single hybrid daylily thru Spring

Garden Pic Wednesday: Glories of Late Summer!

Image
Each season brings it's own interesting sights to the garden! Highlights of my late summer garden include: A flock of brand new Silver Pampas Grass plumes! This beauty is in a border bed in the front yard and those tallest spires are at least 12 feet tall! Huge Shamrock leaves poking up between hen and chicks! Shamrocks (Oxalis) puts up fresh growth around now, then stays green all winter.  Zinnias! I got these planted late, so they're just now really getting going. I can see this particular bunch from my back door. I love the fullness of the yellow & pink heads! Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees love them! Leaving you with pretty garden pictures while I'm on blogging-break for a couple weeks! My n ext post will be around 1 September!

Garden Pic of the Day: Pink Pampas

Image
My pink pampas is actually just beginning to put up it's gorgeous pink plumes---this picture below is how it looked last year! I've nicknamed it "Pink Floozy." It's far more prosperous then it's sister opposite it and a stronger pink. It must have put up over 20 heads! And she's loving all the rain we're getting right now, considering pampas is actually a desert plant . However beautiful it looked, I learned the hard way last year that letting it have that many heads is a bad idea. It made it top-heavy and the first gusty thunderstorm in early Sept blew it right over! So to prevent this little problem, I've decided to limit it to around seven fronds----enough to look pretty, but no so many to make it  top-heavy. I snipped the excess out this past Monday. Because this one and the other are so close to the property line, I take extra care to keep them neat. This means getting down under the cascading fountain of blades to trim a...

Wednesday Garden Pics: Flower Bed Views

Image
The Garden of Pics of the Day  are a couple views of my flower beds and a shot of my tomato plant laden with tomatoes. First up, my front flower bed: This is what people see when they park in the driveway or pass the house. It's a corner bed, triangle shaped. You can see my large pot sitting on the stump that once was a pine tree. This is the pot that has the little blue ceramic cat in it and also has the creek stones I brought back from Indiana. This bed faces east and just gets morning sun.  I took this photo around noon, which is why it's so bright.   Next, a view of the flower beds on the opposite of the driveway from the front bed: You can see the gravel parking space we built below. In the foreground is one of my Rubeckia plants full of blossoms. My house is on the left, the neighbors on the right. In the background you can see a very tall, leafy plant with grassy pampas behind it. That tall thing is my Hardy Hibiscus, which is j...

A Startling Surprise

Image
It's time for Mama Kat's Writing Prompt and today the topic is, " Describe a time you felt startled." At first I drew a blank. I've certainly been startled many times, but my goal with this blog is to write about pleasant, uplifting things and I wasn't going to retell any of the horrible startling moments that first came to mind. Trying to think of a good one while laying in bed, I prayed that the Lord bring one to mind, since He can easily locate mental files I've forgotten which cabinet I put them in, and He popped a really good one! It happened about 20 years ago. My husband had been sent on an 18 month assignment to Turkey that year and my plan was to visit him for a few weeks over Christmas. The price for a round trip flight was $1200.00, which I knew I could put on our credit card, but the debt of it concerned me.  Our house was brand new then, we'd only moved in a few months before Dave got the assignment. So I wouldn't be alone while he...
