Garden Pic Wednesday: Around the Neighborhood!

I took some recent photos of what's blooming in my neighborhood at this time of year:

Winter Cassia:
Several neighbors have this in their landscape. This shot is across the street kitty-corner from my house. These gorgeous yellow flowers bloom from Sept well into winter. Also called Christmas Cassia.  The flowers are lightly fragrant I noticed when I walked over to take a picture! 




Mulhy Grass
Sometimes called Purple fountain grass. This is frilly pink stuff is everywhere in autumn around here! So pretty. It's a super popular as a landscape plant because it's drought tolerant and carefree.
I walked down to the corner, turned right to get this shot.




And Overhead----tons of Pine Cones!
Pine trees are everywhere in my neighborhood. This particular one I photographed is behind a neighbors house two doors down. several.
When the builders built houses here, they only cleared what was necessary to build each house and nothing else. 
So everyone has an assortment of pine, Bay, scrub oak or Live Oak trees.

It's been raining intermittently today as the tail of Isaac's outer-most eastern band passed over us today. Luckily, no thunder this a.m. so I could get to water aerobics at the Y. Thundered later a bit, but sun is out now. It's one of those liquid sunshine kind of days. Mama Kat Thursday: May Flowers!

This weeks Mama Kat blog prompt: "April Showers bring May Flowers. Show us your May Flowers!" A white ceramic kitty peeks out from behind Hosta that's between Red Saliva and  Pink Million Bells in my front garden container! **** A stone Hippo swims among wood chips beneath  a Curly Parsley in a container  on the back patio! (He's a gift a friend brought back for us from his visit in Africa.) **** In Florida, May brings Easter Lilies! My house was surrounded by dozens of these all blooming at once! **** May also brings Gardenias! This bush is heavy with blooms both new and old!  **** In Florida, May is blueberry season! These are container blueberries. **** My young tomato plants in my veggie garden! The one on the right is bred particularly for Southern heat & humidy; the other is a Roma. Good Eating Monday: Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding!

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter. For Garden Pic Wednesday this week I have an excellent photo of a pine tree flower! You didn't know pine trees flower?  Well, you'll have to stop back for a look! Today's Good Eating Recipe is a family favorite my Mother used to make often for us as kids: Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding! What Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding Looks Like This is just your basic wholesome old fashioned bread pudding made with just eggs, bread, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar & raisins! No sauces to make. Just simple bread pudding. We'd eat it hot with a little evaporated milk poured over the top.

Garden Pic Wednesday: My Christmas Bouquets!

Today, Hubby and I were doing a little outside clean-up: he got up on the roof and cleaned off the pine needle debris off the whole roof, but particularly the gutter corners while I cleaned up the litter of pine cones. They hadn't been picked up in a month, so quite a few. Then refilled the bird feeder and watered the Gerbers and Mums and various pots of Salvia and Parsley with miracle grow. The orange Gerber put up a bloom and is preparing another and the mums are in a regrowth phase prepping for spring bloom. Today's picture, though, is of my Christmas bouquet. Publix's grocery had a special on bundles of Alstroemeria, 3 for $12, which is a very good deal.  So on Christmas Eve we bought 3 of them, which gave me enough not only for my vase of Frazier greenery, but I had to also press a clear glass juice pitcher into service to hold a bunch on the kitchen counter and had a few blooms to put in a tiny with a bit of tree greenery on the sink counter in the guest ba

Mama Kat Thursday: The Big Win

The Mama Kat writing prompt today is, "You won an award sometime in your life...what was it for?" After the military I went to a two-year college to study Commercial Art.  During the course of that study, our instructor presented us with an class project for the Indiana State Fair. They wanted to decorate their Pioneer Building on the State Fair Grounds in Indianapolis with 6 symbolic logos representing topics like Agriculture, Industry, Hoosier Travel and so on. It was a class contest and the State Fair committee would select the winning design. Indiana State Fair Grounds Now the Indiana State Fair is a massive affair. It's huge.  It has two sides with a horse track in the middle. This photo shows the main side that includes the Coliseum, numerous permanent barns for livestock and horses plus the permanent exhibit halls that showcase exhibits, like 4-H projects from clubs all over the state.
