Garden Pic Wednesday: Spring Snowflakes 2020

This clump of Spring Snowflakes in my back garden bed are always a delightful sight in early spring!
It's Snowdrops Southern cousin. There are both Spring & Summer Snowflakes and both have identical white flowers with the green dots, like little fancy skirts.
The difference is height. Spring Snowflakes make a clump of greenery about 10 inches in height, while Summer Snowflakes have giant-size greenery, ranging 18 inches to 3 feet in height. 
So, definitely mine are Spring Snowflakes.

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter.   A little known fact about me is I was once was an active member of an Official Star Trek Club.  It was around the spring of 1988. My husband and I were living in Eglin Air Force Base Housing at the time and we saw listed in the personal ads in the Base newspaper that someone was seeking people interested in participating in a Star Trek Club. So, we were immediately interested and called the provided phone number. Turned out it was a couple right there in Base Housing. who only lived a few streets away from us, named Chris & Tammy. We promptly met them and soon we and a few others became regular Club attendees. To become an "Official Chapter of Starfleet," we first had to choose a name for our club, which was considered our "ship," then we registered formally with whoever managed the Trek Club regional chapters in Florida at that time. Mama Kat Thursday: Boat Tales

The Mama Kat prompt I chose today concerned my experience "being on a boat." My best, most dramatic boat experience happened in 1978 when I was in the Air Force and assigned to Karamursel Air Base in Turkey. It was custom to be assigned a "sponsor" from the future location, who would meet me and show me around. I was a medic and she was an Airmen at the clinic I'd be working at. So I flew into Istanbul. It was near lunchtime and I'd been awake over 24 hours. My sponsor met me along with two friends she brought along, all medics as well. One was a guy and one was girl, who was their supervisor and would be mine, too. They hustled me and my baggage outside to the line of taxi's and haggled with the driver over the fare price, then when they agreed, we got in and drove off. Mama Kat Thursday: Backwoods Indiana Memories: Laundry Day

Wringer Washing Machine I remember while growing up in rural Indiana in the 60's and 70's, doing laundry was an all day event. My clearest memories of  "laundry day," come from summer time, when we were out of school.  Mother had a certain day of the week she did laundry usually. I liked to sleep in and I recall waking up around 9:30 to the chugging rhythm the wringer washer already at work.  I'd see all the dirty laundry sorted into piles around the utility room floor: whites, light colors,  medium colors, dark colors and heavy darks, like jeans. (The photo is one I found online of a Kenmore wringer washer quite similar to the last model I remember Mother having in the 70's.) You have to understand, wringer washers only do the washing part. S he'd start with whites, then once the washer finished it's wash cycle, it would stop. Then she'd, by hand, pull each item of clothing out of the washer and feed it through the wringer rollers ...

Garden Pic Wednesday: Red-Headed Woodpecker & Blue Hydrangeas!

For today's Garden Pics: First, a fair shot of a Red-Headed Woodpecker on my squirrel proof feeder.  They're coloring makes them easy to identify. He may not be able to get inside the feeder, but his long beak allows him to reach through and get a tasty sunflower seed! The Red-Bellied Woodpeckers do the same! Next: My Dark Blue Hydrangea! It is actually a bit deeper blue then captured by my camera. This has been my best year yet for a good show of  multiple bloom heads on nearly all my hydrangeas!  The secret is not to hedge or cut them after July! (Since my friend mentioned it: I read on Pinterest it helps Hydrangea be more blue if you bury a few copper pennies near the roots, so I did bury a couple by each blue.) **** Be sure to stop back tomorrow to see what's up for Mama Kat!
