Garden Pic Wednesday: Snake Iris

Today's featured garden picture is my Snake Iris
I saw these in a garden catalog and ordered them about 3 years ago because they are so novel looking; citron green centers with dark purple, almost black, flag tips. They are a miniature iris with grass-like leaves. I planted them in this container because I read they multiply and spread readily---and they have! They've gone from 5 to about 15 to 20 blooms. They don't last long, but put on fine show about about 10 days.
I think they're called "Snake Iris" because they vaguely look like a snake's open mouth.

The Mama Kat prompt today is the word: "Glistening." Glistening immediately brings perspiration to mind: my hubby's perspiration in particular. Actually, he's NOT a sweaty guy, but he does have a sweaty problem: about a year ago his armpits developed an allergy to stick antiperspirant. Mama Kat Thursday: Vintage Velveeta Recipe

The Mama Kat blog prompt for today is: "Share a favorite recipe from your childhood that you still make today." Golden Meatball Casserole. It's a vintage Velveeta back-of-the-box recipe that my Mom made when I was growing up and that I still make!  Who can resist Velveeta?  The hubby loves it.  I usually make it for him for his birthday and generally fairly often during the winter months. It's rich, cheesy and delicious skillet meal that only takes about 40 minutes to put together in total, including prep time--as long as you use frozen meatballs! For this recipe you'll need either a large skillet ,12-inches diameter size or a 16-inch size electric skille t. Either will work. Mama Kat Thursday: A Waste of Money

T oday's Mama Kat prompt option I'm doing is to share a time I wasted money. This was back in the day before Internet, when ordinary newspapers were more prevalent that I read an ad for "make money at home stuffing envelopes." I was a young, freshly married housewife attracted to the promise of being able to work at home. I imagined this job was like  stuffing envelopes with actual advertising for a legitimate company to bulk mail. That's what it sounds like, right?  To find out more about this "job," I had to mail $20 to a specified address.  I did that.  A few days letter I got a type-written letter explaining this so called "job for stuffing envelopes" was nothing, but tricking people into sending tons of $20 dollar bills to whoever ran the same ad. Good Eating Monday: Peach Cobbler Dump Cake!

Yes, I tried another new Pinterest recipe and this one is a winner! The primary dictionary definition of a "Dump Cake," is an easily made cobbler in which cake mix is dumped over canned fruit or pie filling.  This recipe was pinned from Del Monte, which means it's been a recipe that's been created & tested in a corporate test kitchen. That's one benefit of all those label, can & box recipes provided by manufacturers on their product packaging. You can even buy cookbooks featuring nothing, but package & label recipes of which many are vintage. The only changes I'd suggest is add one more 15 oz can of fruit. It can be more peaches, cherry fruit cocktail, regular fruit cocktail or whatever you want. (So, I've noted 4 cans of peaches in the recipe.)   It just needs a little more volume on the fruit quantity.  And stir a teaspoon or two of cinnamon into the fruit! Mama Kat Thursday: Don't Spook the Cat

The Mama Kat writing prompt today is on the topic of, "Write about the last thing that spooked...your pet." This is our cat, Sunni. She's exclusively an indoor cat.(Because fleas will bite Hubby and we can't have that) Sunni is very companionable and has us well trained. She sits at the table with us for dinner, then runs to the bedroom and "calls" for one of us to come make a "cave" for her in a blanket, so she can get in it and be covered up. Her one penchant is she doesn't like other cats. She doesn't even like seeing one walking around in her range of sight outside.  Several neighbors have outdoor/indoor cats and they walk through my yard; sometimes even approaching the sliding glass door to peer within. Sunni flattens as low as she can and watches them intently till they leave. If they get too close to the sliding glass door, she'll sniff loudly and growl and even yowl menacingly at them.
