Garden Pic Wednesday: Portuguese Squill

Today, my Portuguese Squill is in season!
The heads make the most interesting photo specimens as they first begin to bloom, the blossoms gradually unfurling a few at a time until it's one full, flat head of bluish-purple flowers!
Easy to grow. It's a bulb you plant in the fall. Of the 5 original bulbs I planted 3 years ago, 4 survived and have doubled.

Today's Garden Pics are various Eastern Box Turtle friends that visit my yard: I caught this shot one rainy day last week: This block path runs along the South wall bed. Actually it channels water away from my front door to my back yard and this Boxie girl was very intently toddling her way down it to my back yard. I happen to know she is female--but only because it's mating season and well, that's helped me identify who's male and who's female. This one has already mated. Interesting fact : a female box turtle can lay fertile eggs from one mating session for the next 4 years! And she is completely able to choose when she's ready to lay. Also the temperature at the time eggs are laid determines whether the hatchings are all male or all female! This shot is one of my regular visitors enjoying a cooling soak in my "birdbath" dish.      What most people think of when you say, "hail."      "Umm, we're gonna tell."      I stared with appall at my fellow 4th grade classmates, who were standing around me by the 12 foot floor-to-ceiling window just as a hail storm began peppering cars below us with ice pellets. I had only just made a simple weather observation.        "Look, hail," I'd said.      " That's a cuss word," I was promptly informed.      "We're gonna tell," someone else promised.       I puffed up defensively. I've Been On A Life Journey...

My life journey transitioned in 2020 when my husband of 38 years unxpectedly died in December that year. I was numb for months, yet still functioning thru day to day life. The Lord sustained me, granting me insights into my husbands death.  Now, looking back aside from those high-points, that first year is kind of a blur. Of course, priorities changed.  First thing I did,  right after his death, was adopt a cat from a local no-kill shelter. (She picked me!) We had a plan to adopt anyway and I enjoy a cat for companionship.  His death totally rearranged my life--I had to rearrange my daily routine, rearrange my house, my closets, my social activities... I'm still with the Navigators, doing ministry in the town I live in that's outside a military base, though now alone without my life partner. I don't have family in town or any children. Garden Pic Wednesday: Bachelar Buttons!

Garden Pics today: A Profusion of Bachelor Buttons!  Sometimes they are called Cornflowers. I've never had such a thick and prosperous bunch! These I planted last fall from a random leftover box of Wild Flower type seeds and successfully protected them from the December deep freeze. I favor the blue, but they also come in shades of pink and white. My newest Garden addition: This green ceramic frog now sits amongst the Golden Creeping Jenny! I found him at the Dollar Tree.
