Random Garden Pics: Amaryllis & Chinese Stonecrop

I have 2 Amaryllis, each in a container out in my front beds: one is a dark, solid red and the other is this reddish-orange & white. Both have been faithful to bloom for like 15 years!



Today's other picture is Chinese Stonecrop in one of my patio containers, which is just now starting to bloom. I'm not quite sure how it got there exactly, but it looks really good!

Mama Kat Thursday: Window Shade Capers

Today's post is another notably amusing memory from my childhood visits to Grandma Robbins house. Our house in Indiana, where my sisters and I grew up, had windows and curtains and that was it. We'd never seen a pull-down window shade in person, but just  on cartoons where the characters were always pulling them down, then letting them snap up to roll crazily at the the top. (Amazingly, I couldn't find a single window shade gif of Looney-Toons or Tom & Jerry, pulling down window shades, though it was pretty common on those shows.  So I drew one.) But our Grandma Robbins had real window shades on her windows---the old fashioned vinyl draw-down kind with a pull-string. I recall that string had a ring on the end  that was encircled with pretty ecru colored crochet and that the shade had a floral print. Mama Kat Thursday: When A Job Turns Bad

The Mama Kat prompt topic for today is: "Tell us about a job you quit...and why?"   I suppose everyone has a job they've quit at some point. I quit mine after 17 years. I used to work for a local flower shop as a floral designer. When I was first hired, the manager was a woman named Millie. She's actually the one who trained me and she was a pretty good manager. She provided a strong sense of leadership, clear guidelines for everyone to follow, hosted feed-back/brain-storming sessions for her employees and was smart enough to have an assistant manager, so she didn't have to be there every minute.   About 18 months later, Millie decided to retire and her assistant manager, Donna, took over as manager. Now the flower shop was actually owned by a Frenchman named Alain, who was a very savvy businessman. He just did the books, paid the bills and set the financial goals for the managers. The Mama Kat blog prompt for today is" "Share one of your "did that really just happen to me" life moments..." To win something was a surprise. That people I knew and invited wanted to go with me made it amazing! It was 1977 and I happened to fill out a little form at some store for a local pizzeria to win a "free pizza party for you and 6 friends." To my huge surprise, I actually won. I very excited. I'd never won anything before! Plus it was December, my birthday month and I thought it would make a great birthday celebration! But the trick was how to get there and who could might actually want to go with me? I was in the Air Force then, stationed in Omaha, Nebraska at Offutt Air Force Base. I didn't have a car. The best thing my Dad ever taught me: An amusing picture of Bette Davis from Pinterest During the nearly 5 years I was in the Air Force, I never owned a car.  Once I got out of service, returned home and was planning to go off to college in the fall, then I needed one. So I finally bought car. Before I was going to go driving off to live on my own, though, my Dad wanted to make sure I knew all the basics of car care: 1)  How to Change a Tire.  He made sure I knew where the jack and lug wrench were stored in the wheel well, how to properly place the jack plus block another wheel and how to use the lug wrench. (I had already purchased a 4-way lug wrench because I felt it would provide me better leverage for the task, should I ever be called upon to do change a flat.)  2)  How to Check Fluids.  He showed me where the oil dip stick was and how to check it.
