Garden Pic Wednesday: Spring Border Clean Up!

Cleaning up this border above the block wall was one of my tasks this week. I like to put my potted plants here for summer because it's shady with a touch of sun at certain times of the day.
I put down a layer of wood mulch just to make this area look nice this year, then put out my various indoor plants: Aloe (red container), a red velvet Echeveria (blue container) & Christmas Cactus (yellow container).
I noticed the mulch helped the clumps the Aspargus fern stand out.
My yard is lower then the herringbone property at this point, thus the need for the pretty block wall.

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter.   A little known fact about me is I was once was an active member of an Official Star Trek Club.  It was around the spring of 1988. My husband and I were living in Eglin Air Force Base Housing at the time and we saw listed in the personal ads in the Base newspaper that someone was seeking people interested in participating in a Star Trek Club. So, we were immediately interested and called the provided phone number. Turned out it was a couple right there in Base Housing. who only lived a few streets away from us, named Chris & Tammy. We promptly met them and soon we and a few others became regular Club attendees. To become an "Official Chapter of Starfleet," we first had to choose a name for our club, which was considered our "ship," then we registered formally with whoever managed the Trek Club regional chapters in Florida at that time. Friday Finds: Coffee Grounds in the Garden

Today's "find" is using Coffee Grounds in the garden! I usually keep a small bowl on the counter lined with a plastic bag (like a Walmart bag) and to empty my grounds into, then I  dump the wet grounds into a 10 x 13 foil pan, shake it to spread them out and let them dry  in the sun. I find them easier to sprinkle over soil if they're dry. I understand you can ask Starbucks for used grounds and they'll give you a large quantity---good if you want a lot. Things to Do with Coffee Grounds: *  Sprinkling grounds over the surface of soil around Hostas and other garden plants is a great deterrent for snails & slugs, who don't like the texture. *   Dig grounds (wet or dry) into the soil in around any acid-loving plants: Azaleas, Roses, Hydrangeas, Camellias, Blueberries & Citrus Trees. Garden Pic Wednesday: Snake Plant Bloom & New Birdhouse!

I was out picking up pine cones this cold sunny day. I use a grabber stick to pick them up, the kind you can buy in a handicapped aid section. We have a couple, since we used to use them for picking up aluminum cans when we had someplace to sell the aluminum per pound. Now I just use it on pine cones and plop them in a mop bucket carry. Figure the bucket holds a minimum of 20 and I filled and emptied it 8 times, that's 160 cones.  Did I say I have a lot of pine cones in my yard? Today's Garden Pictures include my indoor flowers on my indoor Snake Plant and my new birdhouse I just hung outside the other day! First, a close-up of my Snake Plant bloom: It sits outside all summer, then blooms this time of year every year. This year it's got 4 bloom stalks up! Notice the tiny clear droplets? Friday Finds: Bamahenge And Other Interesting Places

Our visited our friends, Bernie & Jacqui, in Pensacola this past Friday and they drove us across the Alabama border for a unique garden lunch and some strange sight-seeing. Our first stop was lunch at the Copper Kettle Tea Bar in Foley, Alabama, located opposite the Old Train Station Museum. In fact, the building the restaurant resides in once one of many similar buildings that housed rail-road staff back in the days when trains were primarily transportation. This photo is a view of the rear of the restaurant and the back yard garden, which is full of mix & match table and chair seating beneath a huge Live Oak Tree! The Copper Kettle Tea Bar specializes in lots of teas, but also has several French-pressed coffee's plus home-made soups, sandwiches & desserts!  Their lunch menu usually consists of 2 choices of soup & one sandwich choice plus a selection of desserts.  I had a curry apple soup and Greek-style turkey hummus sandwich.
