Garden Pic Wednesday: Vased Christmas Greenery!

We usually buy a fresh Christmas tree from the local Boy Scouts here in town and I like to fill a vase with cuttings from lower branches that usually have to be snipped off around the bottom end.

So, today's photo is my kitchen counter display featuring my vase of Frasier Fir greenery, my large ceramic penguin (for tea candles) and my first Christmas card. 



My Birthday is next week and I usually buy a grocery bouquet and arrange the flowers in this vase of greenery. 
Change the water, trim the stems and the greenery will last through New Years.

Yes, I tried another new Pinterest recipe and this one is a winner! The primary dictionary definition of a "Dump Cake," is an easily made cobbler in which cake mix is dumped over canned fruit or pie filling.  This recipe was pinned from Del Monte, which means it's been a recipe that's been created & tested in a corporate test kitchen. That's one benefit of all those label, can & box recipes provided by manufacturers on their product packaging. You can even buy cookbooks featuring nothing, but package & label recipes of which many are vintage. The only changes I'd suggest is add one more 15 oz can of fruit. It can be more peaches, cherry fruit cocktail, regular fruit cocktail or whatever you want. (So, I've noted 4 cans of peaches in the recipe.)   It just needs a little more volume on the fruit quantity.  And stir a teaspoon or two of cinnamon into the fruit! Good Eating Monday: Indoor S'mores!

It was in the late 1960's when I tried my first S'More. I think the recipe was in the 4-H Cooking Project book. After that first taste, it was a family favorite whenever we had a wiener roast outside, since classic S'Mores involved toasted marshmallows. The original recipe calls for Hershey bars, but we found Hershey bar pieces weren't that responsive to melting all that fast or well under a single hot marshmallow, so we switched to using Brach's Chocolate Stars, which melt perfectly! We'd used 3 or 4 stars per half a graham, topped with a fat toasted marshmallow and they were perfect! So, with fond memories of S'Mores, today's recipe is a Pinterest recipe for Indoor S'Mores I tried out this week! I've Been On A Life Journey...

My life journey transitioned in 2020 when my husband of 38 years unxpectedly died in December that year. I was numb for months, yet still functioning thru day to day life. The Lord sustained me, granting me insights into my husbands death.  Now, looking back aside from those high-points, that first year is kind of a blur. Of course, priorities changed.  First thing I did,  right after his death, was adopt a cat from a local no-kill shelter. (She picked me!) We had a plan to adopt anyway and I enjoy a cat for companionship.  His death totally rearranged my life--I had to rearrange my daily routine, rearrange my house, my closets, my social activities... I'm still with the Navigators, doing ministry in the town I live in that's outside a military base, though now alone without my life partner. I don't have family in town or any children. Mama Kat Thursday: Surprise Birthday Back-Fire!

 Today's Mama Kat prompt is to write about, "a time you did something sneaky." Once upon a time, we had two guys in our military singles Bible Study group named Rod and Bruce. They were room-mates in a house off-base. Rod's 26th birthday was coming up and Bruce got the brain-storm to throw Rod a surprise birthday party. His plan was to distract Rod and get him away from the house by suggesting to Rod that they go to some Chinese restaurant to eat, but it would be a Chinese restaurant he "couldn't quite remember the location of," so they'd be out driving around while we set up the surprise party at Rod's house. We brought cake and blew up balloons. There was about a dozen of us. Mama Kat Thursday: Country Living

The Mama Kat blog prompt option I'm doing today is,  "Your Childhood Neighborhood." The trick is--back when I was growing up in rural Indiana camera's used film and personal computers didn't exist. I never imagined forty years later I might want pictures of the old homestead to load on a blog on a personal computer! Thank goodness for Google Earth!  In order to  screen print a couple views, I had to go to street level view and actually "drive" down the road until I found the proper location.  Funny thing is: things don't look that much different from 70's, when I lived there, to 2009 when Google collected these images. A few more homes here and there, older trees, but pretty much the same. When I say rural, I mean rural.
