Garden Pic Wednesday: Spring Flowers

Today I've got some nice spring shots I caught on a moderately sunny day:

Bright yellow flowers start dotting bare branches in late January!

Oddly, mine do better in cooler weather then in the heat of summer. This orange one was the first up just recently.



A Shot of That Bit of Yard by the Mailbox With Excess Clover I Was working on Last Wednesday:
This is a non-mow area I've been  naturalizing with various ground covers and low-growing bloomers.  I bought some Blanket Flower seed to sprout and put in this area. Blanket Flowers are a native flower and should do well in this sunny spot.

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter. For Garden Pic Wednesday this week I have an excellent photo of a pine tree flower! You didn't know pine trees flower?  Well, you'll have to stop back for a look! Today's Good Eating Recipe is a family favorite my Mother used to make often for us as kids: Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding! What Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding Looks Like This is just your basic wholesome old fashioned bread pudding made with just eggs, bread, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar & raisins! No sauces to make. Just simple bread pudding. We'd eat it hot with a little evaporated milk poured over the top....

Mama Kat Thursday: Panama City Beach

  Today's Mama Kat topic is: "Reminisce About A Recent Trip Plus Pictures!      Who doesn't like a beach retreat, right?"     The Laguna Beach Christian Retreat Center is just west of Panama City Beach and the site of our annual spring Christian conference for military singles & couples from several local bases about an hour east of where we live.       Most of the retreat facility is located across the road from Gulf and though the beach side is lined with homes, the beach is public, accessible via numerous walkways like the one below:      Hubby and I and our Eglin team of military singles put this years conference together. We decided not to have a central speaker. Instead, we divided the group into small numbers to attend various 30-minute topic presentations, then had participants pair off together to trade info on what they learned.       We had music Saturday morning & evening...

Mama Kat Thursday: Two Before & After Projects

The Mama Kat Prompt topic for today is: "Show Us a Before & After." Last fall and this spring I had two major  drainage issue locations: one in the back yard and one on the side of the garage. After hours of TLC they're greatly improved. Here's the before & after on both: First: The Back Yard Pond : This happened every time we had a heavy rain: After: Same spot as it looks now. Paradise. I took advantage of the naturally concave area by edging it with flagstones and filling the center with gravel & water loving plants. The Chocolate Elephant Ears here are gorgeous! Second, The Other Pond: This bed edges on the garage near the front of the house. After:  I edged the bed with paving blocks, raised the dirt level on the grass side, then planted grass plugs. Mama Kat Thursday: The Big Win

The Mama Kat writing prompt today is, "You won an award sometime in your life...what was it for?" After the military I went to a two-year college to study Commercial Art.  During the course of that study, our instructor presented us with an class project for the Indiana State Fair. They wanted to decorate their Pioneer Building on the State Fair Grounds in Indianapolis with 6 symbolic logos representing topics like Agriculture, Industry, Hoosier Travel and so on. It was a class contest and the State Fair committee would select the winning design. Indiana State Fair Grounds Now the Indiana State Fair is a massive affair. It's huge.  It has two sides with a horse track in the middle. This photo shows the main side that includes the Coliseum, numerous permanent barns for livestock and horses plus the permanent exhibit halls that showcase exhibits, like 4-H projects from clubs all over the state. This is for the "Write On Edge" Writers Prompt for this week:   the challenge was to pick an event or instance from your life and give it a title and write a tag line for it, like a title and tag line for a book. So here's my title and tag for an event in my life. Nineteen Hours to Ankara      Stranded in Istanbul, her connecting flight canceled, a huge suitcase in hand and no way to contact anyone, Adele was trapped with two Turkish businessmen determined to escort her all the way to her destination by train---but could she really trust them?         Only the name is fiction. The rest is true. Quite a complicated situation and no cell phones back then.    Life is full of adventures.
