Garden Pic Wednesday: Bee, Balloon Flower & Forget-Me-Not

Three pictures for todays Garden Pics:

Preening Bee:
I saw this Bumble Bee, clinging to this Pampas Grass bloom. It was cleaning  itself, like a cat, washing this leg, then that leg, preening. Then about 6 or 7 minutes later, flew on it's way. 



Just One Forget-Me-Not
Out of a dozen seeds in a packet a neighbor gave me, only this one Forget-Me-Knot grew.
It has just bloomed. I'm going to let it go to seed. Maybe more next year?


 

Balloon Flower:
Despite the purple tone in the sunlight, this Blue Balloon Flower tends toward bluish.
They're called that named because their buds, just prior to opening, look like little hot air balloons.
I'm letting spent buds go to seed on these, too, though I'll collect them. This plant is actually one grown from saved seed.

  A little known fact about me is I was once was an active member of an Official Star Trek Club.  It was around the spring of 1988. Good Eating Monday: Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding!

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter. For Garden Pic Wednesday this week I have an excellent photo of a pine tree flower! You didn't know pine trees flower?  Well, you'll have to stop back for a look! Today's Good Eating Recipe is a family favorite my Mother used to make often for us as kids: Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding! What Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding Looks Like This is just your basic wholesome old fashioned bread pudding made with just eggs, bread, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar & raisins! No sauces to make. Just simple bread pudding. We'd eat it hot with a little evaporated milk poured over the top....

Mama Kat Thursday: 7 Things I Rather Do

The Mama Kat prompt suggestion for today was,  "List 7 things you'd rather do then clean the bathroom..." However, cleaning a bathroom isn't my most dreaded chore. It's washing dishes that I hate.  I just let all the stuff that doesn't get put in the dish washer pile up because I'd much rather be... #1)  Diddling around on my computer... #2)  Organizing my messy desk... #3)  Cleaning the garage... #4)  Doing laundry (though I don't like folding and putting stuff away either. See item #1) #5)  Doing just about anything else I can outside--mowing, hedging, weeding... #6)  Watching a DVD movie on T.V... #7)  Just sitting on the sofa watching the birds visit the feeder outside... ***** Plus I saw this photo below in Pinterest, about sewing a dust-mop on your tot's shirt who isn't crawling yet. Garden Pic Wednesday: Red-Headed Woodpecker & Blue Hydrangeas!

For today's Garden Pics: First, a fair shot of a Red-Headed Woodpecker on my squirrel proof feeder.  They're coloring makes them easy to identify. He may not be able to get inside the feeder, but his long beak allows him to reach through and get a tasty sunflower seed! The Red-Bellied Woodpeckers do the same! Next: My Dark Blue Hydrangea! It is actually a bit deeper blue then captured by my camera. This has been my best year yet for a good show of  multiple bloom heads on nearly all my hydrangeas!  The secret is not to hedge or cut them after July! (Since my friend mentioned it: I read on Pinterest it helps Hydrangea be more blue if you bury a few copper pennies near the roots, so I did bury a couple by each blue.) **** Be sure to stop back tomorrow to see what's up for Mama Kat!

Mama Kat Thursday: Backwoods Indiana Memories: Laundry Day

Wringer Washing Machine I remember while growing up in rural Indiana in the 60's and 70's, doing laundry was an all day event. My clearest memories of  "laundry day," come from summer time, when we were out of school.  Mother had a certain day of the week she did laundry usually. I liked to sleep in and I recall waking up around 9:30 to the chugging rhythm the wringer washer already at work.  I'd see all the dirty laundry sorted into piles around the utility room floor: whites, light colors,  medium colors, dark colors and heavy darks, like jeans. (The photo is one I found online of a Kenmore wringer washer quite similar to the last model I remember Mother having in the 70's.) You have to understand, wringer washers only do the washing part. S he'd start with whites, then once the washer finished it's wash cycle, it would stop. Then she'd, by hand, pull each item of clothing out of the washer and feed it through the wringer rollers ...
