Garden Pic Wednesday: Cardinal Basil!

Back in spring, I ordered Cardinal Basil seeds to plant because the flower was noted as being particularly showy. So I've watched the plants grow all these months, eagerly awaiting blooms!
Finally, the time has come!

Today's Garden Pics are of my Cardinal Basil Just Staring to Bloom:
This is the top. The top leaves are turning red ahead of the flowers opening. I can see this will greatly add to the showy effect!
 



Here's a side shot:
This basil also has stunning cherry red stems as well. It's modestly tall: about 25 inches.


When there's actual flowers I'll post again!

The Mama Kat topic for today is:  "The best part of my day is..." I guess I kind of fulfill that famous Folgers Coffee Jingle: "the best part of wakin' up is... "some kind of coffee.. .in my cup." The first best part of my day is Hubby finding my head somewhere under the covers to plant a kiss on my forehead, then the second best part of my day is that first cup of coffee. Usually a mix of Decaf Community Coffee and regular Chocolate Mint 8 O'Clock Coffee. The next best part of my day is our cat, Sunni, asking me to take a time out, away from the computer, let her sit on my lap for a little attention. We rest together that way, she and I. Good Eating Monday: Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding!

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter. For Garden Pic Wednesday this week I have an excellent photo of a pine tree flower! You didn't know pine trees flower?  Well, you'll have to stop back for a look! Today's Good Eating Recipe is a family favorite my Mother used to make often for us as kids: Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding! What Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding Looks Like This is just your basic wholesome old fashioned bread pudding made with just eggs, bread, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar & raisins! Mama Kat Thursday: The Unlucky Rider

The Mama Kat writing topic today is to write a post inspired by the word, "Puddle." In Florida it rains. It rains a lot. Sometimes, that rain leaves broad puddles of standing water. Sometimes those puddles are on the road. On this particular day where our story begins, Hubby and I were in our Kia SUV driving west through our small town toward the Air Force Base. The road was mostly dry from an earlier downpour, but there were still some spots of standing water.  We stopped at a red light at a busy intersection along with other cars and one motorcycle. We were in the right hand lane. There was a car ahead of us and one beside us. The car beside us had a guy on a motorcycle directly behind him and the motorcycle guy was boxed in by more cars beside and behind him.  He was a young man on a medium street bike just wearing a shirt, jeans and a helmet. Mama Kat Thursday: Backwoods Indiana Memories: Laundry Day

Wringer Washing Machine I remember while growing up in rural Indiana in the 60's and 70's, doing laundry was an all day event. My clearest memories of  "laundry day," come from summer time, when we were out of school.  Mother had a certain day of the week she did laundry usually. I liked to sleep in and I recall waking up around 9:30 to the chugging rhythm the wringer washer already at work.  I'd see all the dirty laundry sorted into piles around the utility room floor: whites, light colors,  medium colors, dark colors and heavy darks, like jeans. (The photo is one I found online of a Kenmore wringer washer quite similar to the last model I remember Mother having in the 70's.) You have to understand, wringer washers only do the washing part.
