Random Garden Pics: A Unique Fern

-

I bought a 2-root pack of Cinnamon Fern many years ago, but apparently one of the roots was not Cinnamon Fern, but...this instead. There are zillions of types of fern and this seems to have a fern-like structure. Regardless, it comes up faithfully every year and I like it.
I might be Holly Fern. Some of the older leaf stems at the back look similar to photos of Holly Fern.

Mama Kat Thursday: The Win

-

The Mama Kat Thursday blog prompt link-up topic is:  "You won an award at some point in your life...what was it for?" I'm terrible at sports. I don't like hitting or chasing or bouncing or catching balls of any sort. I also hated games like "steal the bacon" or "kick-ball."  At the age when one is playing such things in school and developing that skill set, I lacked eye-hand coordination. However, with age, and eventually a little depth perception correction with glasses, that changed. I had one occasion to go into a batting cage in my late 30's. Bat in hand, I swung the bat at balls the machine was throwing at me and enjoyed the great satisfaction of actually hitting every one.  It was a redeeming moment. But I didn't really find my niche until Hubby and I took a 6-week beginner foil fencing class. Now, technically, fencing is  a martial art and like other martial arts, it's not about size or strength, but speed, skill--a...

Random Garden Pics: Alyssum & Garden Art

-
Image
These white flowers are called Alyssum and the purple leaves are Purple Shamrocks.  I planted this Alyssum last spring---it wintered over, blooming like snow all winter, and now that's it's spring, it's spreading slowly.  To find things that grow well in Florida is actually amazing---so I was so pleased with this Alyssum, I bought more seed to plant! This second picture is one of my favorite Garden Art Pieces: It's 2 clay pots, a smaller one set at an angle inside a larger one, 2 Chicks and lots of Chinese Stonecrop cascading over the side! And the eye-catcher is the ceramic frog. Dollar Tree has the cutest little garden ceramics! Last year it was these frogs. (I bought 3, each in a different position.) This year, it's mushrooms. I bought 2 red ones, though the garden space I plan to put them isn't ready for decor yet.

Hoosier Memories: My Favorite Childhood Game

-
Image
It was Christmas, 1969 when Santa Claus left me a Green Ghost Game, like the one this one pictured below.    The game consisted of the cool glowing board that stood on legs about 4 inches above the floor with black decorative pieces you slid into slots to decorate it.  (a spooky house, shipwreck &  tree). It included 1 large ghost spinner, 12 mini ghosts, 4 player pieces, 3 trap doors and keys to open those doors plus 3 card board box "pits" that fit under the doors that held "creepy" things. (feathers, plastic sticks and length rubber band's which represented "batwings" "bones" and "snakes" respectively.) To play, the game board, spinner and mini-ghosts had to sit out in the light several hours. Then, in a dark room, you'd set it up, dividing the 12 mini-ghosts between the 3 boxes, putting the boxes under the doors & distributing the keys among the 4 players.  The large ghost spinner clicked over a metal tab when yo...

Mama Kat Thursday: The Pizza Party

-
Image
The Mama Kat blog prompt for today is" "Share one of your "did that really just happen to me" life moments..." To win something was a surprise. That people I knew and invited wanted to go with me made it amazing! It was 1977 and I happened to fill out a little form at some store for a local pizzeria to win a "free pizza party for you and 6 friends." To my huge surprise, I actually won. I very excited. I'd never won anything before! Plus it was December, my birthday month and I thought it would make a great birthday celebration! But the trick was how to get there and who could might actually want to go with me? I was in the Air Force then, stationed in Omaha, Nebraska at Offutt Air Force Base. I didn't have a car. It wasn't necessary to get around on base and to work back then, since base buses ran every 30 minutes and, at night, one could order a free base taxi ride to work from the motor pool. This pizzeria, however, was in a...

Garden Pic Wednesday: Nice Hydrangeas!

-
Image
Today's pretty Garden Pic is this blue Hydrangea that's right opposite my front door. Mostly it's blue---though I have seen it bloom both blue and pink heads before. If the soil acidity gets low, it's blooms more pink. I just add Epsom salts around the base periodically to keep it blue.  The rain gutter re-do won't start until around the end of June. It will be nice to have gutters that actually work well. In the meantime, I'm working my way around the house, edging beds. Also still trying to get some annual flower seeds going. The Forget-Me-Knots I got from my sister while home for the Celebration of Life for our Mom, are sprouting. I collect blue flowers, so these are perfect. My sister had a pile of them on the table for people who attended the celebration to take home. Neat idea.
