Garden Pic Wednesday: December Red Salvia!

I have two containers of Red Salvia brightening up my December! This one near the front door and one on the back patio I see out the sliding glass door!
Actually, I took this shot in November and more Salvia has popped up both containers and come to bloom as well, so there's a lot more!
When the blossoms turn brown, I break them off and put them on the soil in the container, so any seeds can grow. 
Temps have been down around 36F degrees at night, but that doesn't bother the Salvia, Vinca or Alyssum. If temps do threaten to freeze, I'll cover the Salvia and that usually works pretty well.

It was the winter of 1944.  Dad was a young sailor home on leave, his first leave, after having spent the previous 18 months on a Minesweeper in the Pacific. Mama Kat Thursday: Lipstick Personality & Ugly Toes

Today's Mama Kat prompt is "My Top Beauty Must Haves." When it comes to beauty products, I have two passions: pretty lips and pretty toes. My sister, Jane, knows about my "toe thing" and teases me about it. She even sent me a mini-manicure kit that's the size of a deodorant for Christmas one year that I still use. I live in Florida. Everyone wears sandals all the time. And I happen to be observant. I look down and observe the state of people toes. I have a pet-peeve list of things I don't like to see: * Un-clipped Claw Toes. Men or Women. * Spa Toes: that's toes that once clearly had a trip to the spa weeks ago, but now the polish is haphazardly wearing off and growing out. * French Manicured Toes: looks good on hands; not so much on toes.      What most people think of when you say, "hail."      "Umm, we're gonna tell."      I stared with appall at my fellow 4th grade classmates, who were standing around me by the 12 foot floor-to-ceiling window just as a hail storm began peppering cars below us with ice pellets. I had only just made a simple weather observation.        "Look, hail," I'd said.      " That's a cuss word," I was promptly informed.      "We're gonna tell," someone else promised.       I puffed up defensively. Mama Kat Thursday: 4-H Camp Memories

The Mama Kat topic of choice today is, "Summer Camp Memories." My sisters and I were in 4-H many years. Our parents were also  4-H leaders for the our local club many of those years as well. A perk of being in 4-H was the annual summer 4-H came held at Lake Shakamak State Park, Indiana.  We'd meet up to board a school bus, then enjoy a jostling hour and a half ride to the park. My memories of 4-H camp are from the 70's. Some things, like the Mess Hall (pictured) look pretty much the same. There's actually a wide circular field of grass in front of this Mess Hall with a ring of cabins that were pretty utilitarian. Just bare cement floors, unfinished walls with 2 x 4's visible  and rows of metal frame bunk-beds. I have two high-light memories of 4-H camp: the Mess Hall singing and evening entertainment at the Vesper Bowl. The Mama Kat blog prompt for today is" "Share one of your "did that really just happen to me" life moments..." To win something was a surprise. That people I knew and invited wanted to go with me made it amazing! It was 1977 and I happened to fill out a little form at some store for a local pizzeria to win a "free pizza party for you and 6 friends." To my huge surprise, I actually won. I very excited. I'd never won anything before! Plus it was December, my birthday month and I thought it would make a great birthday celebration! But the trick was how to get there and who could might actually want to go with me? I was in the Air Force then, stationed in Omaha, Nebraska at Offutt Air Force Base. I didn't have a car. It wasn't necessary to get around on base and to work back then, since base buses ran every 30 minutes and, at night, one could order a free base taxi ride to work from the motor pool.
