Mama Kat Thursday: Window Shade Capers

Image
Today's post is another notably amusing memory from my childhood visits to Grandma Robbins house. Our house in Indiana, where my sisters and I grew up, had windows and curtains and that was it. We'd never seen a pull-down window shade in person, but just  on cartoons where the characters were always pulling them down, then letting them snap up to roll crazily at the the top. (Amazingly, I couldn't find a single window shade gif of Looney-Toons or Tom & Jerry, pulling down window shades, though it was pretty common on those shows.  So I drew one.) But our Grandma Robbins had real window shades on her windows---the old fashioned vinyl draw-down kind with a pull-string. I recall that string had a ring on the end  that was encircled with pretty ecru colored crochet and that the shade had a floral print. I was probably trendy decorating for the early to mid-20th century.  But because my sisters and I had only ever seen window shades on cartoons, w...

Mama Kat Thursday: Something That Made Us Laugh

Image
The Mama Kat prompt I've chosen this week is to, "share something that made us laugh." There was a thing that made us laugh recently and we laughed because it was cute. It happened at the Air Force Commissary where we grocery shop, which can be used by any  U.S service member and their family. It may also be used by visiting foreign military of Ally countries, such as pilots here for a joint flying exercise. Military service members wear a flag patch on the upper arm of their uniforms to identity their country of origin. So Canadian, Aussie, German, Italian, French, Netherlands and United Kingdom military all come here from time to time and sometimes we see them in the Commissary picking up a few things for cooking or grilling. Since the green jungle-camouflage uniforms (called BDU's) generally all look very similar, we have to depend on that flag patch to know who's who. The thing that made us laugh happened in the chip aisle at the Commissary. As...

Good Eating Monday: A Taco Emergency?

Image
I don't have a recipe today, but I do have a funny story that's food related. We were driving through our small town last weekend, on our way to our Air Force Commissary and had to stop at a major intersection because the traffic light had turned red. Despite it being a small town, the roadway through it is six lanes; three going West and three going East.  (The road was widened to  ease tourist traffic prior to the construction of the by-pass.) Anyway, we were in the middle lane when we came to a stop at the light and there were a couple cars in the left lane beside us, but the right lane was clear of any traffic---until out of no where, a big black Cadillac suddenly zoomed past us, running the red light I sort of held my breath watching, because that's a risky thing to do, but, lucky, no one waiting to turn left had moved. About a block past the intersection is a Taco Bell and we stared in wonderment as that speeding Caddy abruptly turned into Taco Bell. ...
