I wasn't inspired to use any of this weeks actual Mama Kat prompts, but there's been a number of amusing incidents reported around town in our local newspaper Police Blotter and I decided to share those.  Hubby and I often get a laugh out of some of the reports, because people are either just dumb or kinda weird. So, here it is, the best of the Police Blotter: On Jan 12, police stopped a car traveling 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. The driver said she was not aware she was going that fast, but thought she was "just cruising."  She was handed a speeding ticket and an opportunity to tell it to the judge. ***** On Jan 18, police responded to a call from a woman who said she'd been jumped by a man and two women who struck her over the head with a pistol. The victim said the suspects had been looking for marijuana because she deals marijuana. Last weekend I talked about the juvenile Mockingbirds being taught by parents to come to the suet cage hanging on my feeder. There were 3: one set of parents had 2 and the other only 1. Now that they are "on their own," they spend all their time harassing each other and chasing one another off the suet cage, each trying to be King of the Hill.  Garden Pics: First, I have a nice shot of my newest Lace Top Hydrangea in bloom. It's called "Cherry Explosion."  It was my one new garden item I ordered this spring. It's a compact variety that won't get larger then about 36 inches in circumference. I love Lace Tops. Many years ago I had a blue one I adored that was not only a blue Lace Top, but also had lovely variegated leaves. I've not seen anything like that since.   And I have Blackberries... Lots of pump, juicy Blackberries. Tame, thornless all on tall, upright stems I tie up, I used to make jam, but I don't really need that much jam any more, so I ...

Garden Pic Wednesday: Past Highlights

  Greetings! We had some brief excitement this morning---a loud "BANG" at 8:30. The sound of a transformer blowing. I said, "It's probably a squirrel." It was the transformer on the electric pole right across from our house. Twenty minutes later, the power company truck arrived before my husband left. He pointed out to my husband the dead squirrel on top of it---yup, the squirrel did it.    I didn't get to this right away as decided today was a good day to get around to caulking the inside edges of our bedroom windows. They're bay windows. It was, of course, a major cleaning job with the bleach and the non-ammonia glass cleaner. Then messing with the bay window hardware getting the curtains down, washed and back up---an arduous task I don't enjoy. The caulk was in a container like hair mousse comes in, designed for easy re-use. It was nice.     I  have 2 garden pics for today: First one is from last summer. It's my ...

Thursday Writer's Workshop Prompt: Greatest Triumph

My Greatest Triumph Many years ago, my husband and I took a 6-week beginner's course in Foil Fencing.  Now foil fencing swords are thin and straight with a protective cover on the tip. It's more of a classic dueling style of swordsmanship. Victory in foil fencing is gained by getting past your opponents sword defense to stick your sword point against their chest.  It's all about stance and form and is tends to be over fairly quickly. I believe our instructor used the 3 touch point method for a match. The fencing stance form generally taught is French: you stand in a sideways position, sword in one hand aimed at opponent while your other arm is held aloft behind you, bent at the elbow. (Think of any Three Musketeer movie you've ever seen---this is their stance.) The general over-all goal of foil fencing is to keep the body area that can be stabbed by the opponent to a minimum. Garden Pic of the Day: Swallowtails & Soggy Gardens

I'm so excited! I found a Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillar in my pot of Flat-Leaf Parsley! I was just in time to get a couple photos, too, because he was finished eating and resting on a piece of pine straw prior to setting off for his next stage of development! Here he is!        I   put some sticks in the pot, hoping he'd stay in the pot for his crystalis stage---but no, he disappeared. I read that they seek "a secure place" to hide and transform. But---apparently he had a brother, because at the time we were looking at this one, my husband turned around and noticed a second caterpillar above the sliding door frame. He had already spun his bit of silk to secure himself there and was on his way into the   crystalis stage. He still looked like a caterpillar, though--just sort of scrunched up and stiff.
