Garden Pic Wednesday: New Flowers!

Two photos for Garden Pics today, both new additions to my garden:

 New Daylily:
This rich maroon beauty with the bright yellow eye is called
 "Night Beacon."  I love it!
I planted it last fall and it's blooming profusely now. I just found it in a bulb in a garden shop somewhere. It's a "rebloomer," so it should bloom again later.




New Petunias:
I know I was thinking of not having Petunias this year, but I saw these unique looking ones at the Ace Hardware and thought they'd go perfect in this pot that's not far from the Night Beacons. They pick up the color of the soft pink and yellow Lantana, the  Night Beacon daylily and Golden Creeping Jenny that are all nearby.

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter. What Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding Looks Like This is just your basic wholesome old fashioned bread pudding made with just eggs, bread, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar & raisins! No sauces to make. Just simple bread pudding. We'd eat it hot with a little evaporated milk poured over the top....

Garden Pic Wednesday: More Florida Winter Color!

There's plenty of winter color to be had in Northwest Florida--if you know what to plant or where to look. Last week I featured Firethorn , a shrub that lights up with bright red berries birds love and brightens up the drab evergreen landscape! This week I'm featuring Dwarf Nandina & Asparagus Fern! First: My Dwarf Nandina: This shrub brings fall and winter color to the Florida landscape and stays small. Max of 2 feet. I only have the one. I love that it's orange in the fall and red in the winter! Dwarf Nandina Next: My Asparagus Fern Thick with Red Berries: It's not actually a fern, but is in the Asparagus family. It's scientific name is "Sprengeri." (pronounced "Springer-Rye) This is both a good evergreen that has tiny white flowers in spring and bright red berries in winter that birds enjoy.  It thrives southern zone landscapes and, anywhere, as a houseplant. Good Eating Tuesday: P.F. Chang's Frozen Mongolian Style Beef Review

I've been trying some recipes, but results are so-so. The last really great recipe I tried was that French Coconut Pie! I'm going to try it again this week with a slight adjustment to sugar-to-coconut ratio. In the meantime, I've  decided I'd review frozen meals we try. We were at the commissary this past weekend and purchased a P.F. Chang's Mongolian Style  Beef meal to have something easy to make for dinner. It was perfect for us since it serves just two really. This is the picture on the bag. Just put in skillet and heat and it makes it's own sauce. No need to add water or anything. (You provide the rice.) This is the meal on the plate. (I added some frozen peas) It's a little saucier then pictured, but otherwise very close. (photo is mine) * The quantity of beef pieces in this meal was generous and they were good size. Garden Pic Wednesday: Fall Gerbers!

My Gerber Daisies were going strong up until Christmas---when we had a hard freeze for 3 days. So this photo is from Dec, sometime before Christmas.  It's not uncommon to have a hard freeze or two on the Florida Panhandle, but rarely does the thermometer dip much below 28 or 29F--which generally just kills the various annual flowers. But over Christmas, it was around 22F for 3 days and frost-burnt all the Mexican Heather, the Amaryllis leaves, my Plumbago shrub, my Butterfly Bush--even my Winter Jasmine shrub---all things I haven't seen get frost-bit, had their leaves all turned brown. Even so, they are still alive, since roots weren't frozen and most, if not all, should regenerate. I was able to save my clumps of Calendula daisies & bachelor buttons only because I covered them with plastic and a double layer of towels. So those are fine.
