Garden Pic Wednesday: Winter Gerber

Today's Garden Pic: a red Gerber Daisy.
I usually have one or two at this time of year. There was a pink one blooming too, but not very pretty, so just this one photographed.
A freeze is coming up on the weekend, so I'll probably snip him and take him in the house.
Trivia note: despite their name, Gerbers are a member of the Sunflower family and not related to daisies at all.

Welcome to the first week of February! It's supposed to be 31 degrees tonight, so after cleaning up the front walk beds, I went around covering various things that either are blooming, about to bloom or that have sensitive leaf buds, like my hydrangea's.  I picked all the yellow daffodils and brought them inside for a cheerful vase on my counter. What Old Fashioned Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding Looks Like This is just your basic wholesome old fashioned bread pudding made with just eggs, bread, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar & raisins! No sauces to make. Just simple bread pudding. We'd eat it hot with a little evaporated milk poured over the top....

Garden Pic Wednesday: Early Winter Color

This is front yard boarder the lays along my property line with my neighbor. It's looked this pretty until just yesterday, when it got a little cold over night that put a dent in the Mexican Heather and some of the white Vinca, but the Marigolds persist. (Those are their solar flamingo lights, which look pretty at night.) And this is a shot of my front bed by the mailbox: That pretty light green plant with the magenta blossoms is a 4'Oclock called "Limelight." This is a fresh growth that sprang up in late September, I think. Here in Florida, 4'Clocks are perennial.  There are actually 3 of them in this bed; this one is the largest.

Garden Pic Wednesday: More Florida Winter Color!

There's plenty of winter color to be had in Northwest Florida--if you know what to plant or where to look. Last week I featured Firethorn , a shrub that lights up with bright red berries birds love and brightens up the drab evergreen landscape! This week I'm featuring Dwarf Nandina & Asparagus Fern! First: My Dwarf Nandina: This shrub brings fall and winter color to the Florida landscape and stays small. Max of 2 feet. I only have the one. I love that it's orange in the fall and red in the winter! Dwarf Nandina Next: My Asparagus Fern Thick with Red Berries: It's not actually a fern, but is in the Asparagus family. It's scientific name is "Sprengeri." (pronounced "Springer-Rye) This is both a good evergreen that has tiny white flowers in spring and bright red berries in winter that birds enjoy.  It thrives southern zone landscapes and, anywhere, as a houseplant. Friday Finds: More Easy Holiday Table Decor Ideas!

With the holidays and big family meals in mind, I'm another week on easy holiday table decorating!  I've collected some photo ideas from Pinterest I think anyone could do! Just remember the centerpiece height rule:  no taller then 12 inches!  Idea #1:  Bowl of "Pomander Balls" Made from Oranges & Whole Cloves! The oranges & cloves release a spicy scent as the orange dries. Tying them with a ribbon & hanging them in a closet was an old-fashioned method of "closet freshener."  But they make a fancy looking holiday centerpiece! You just need oranges, a bottle of Whole Cloves and something to poke through the orange skin just enough so you can insert your cloves,  such as the end of a wood skewer or a nail. Just make sure it's not wider then your clover stem. If the hole is too big, the cloves will fall out.  You could use a pencil to lightly outline a general pattern, if you like.
